What is visual impairment?

Visual impairment, otherwise known as vision impairment or vision loss, is a decreased ability to see to a degree that causes problems to someone’s vision.

The most common cause of visual impairments globally are uncorrected refractive errors, accounting for 43% of all problems, cataracts (33%) and glaucoma (2%). Refractive errors include near-sightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia.

Signs & Symptoms

There are multiple signs and symptoms that can occur, depending on the condition. Some of these include, but are not specific to, visual impairment:

  • Amblyopia, otherwise known as “lazy eye.”
  • Strabismus (misaligned or crossed eyes).
  • Severe, sudden eye pain/burning.
  • Recurrent pain in or around the eye.
  • Hazy, blurred or double vision.
  • Seeing floating ‘spider webs, halos, flashes of light’.
  • Seeing a ‘curtain coming down’ over one eye.
  • Sensing a ‘cup filling with ink’ in one eye.
  • Swollen, red eyes.
  • Changes in colour of pupils.
  • White areas around the pupil of the eye.
  • Sudden development of persistent ‘floaters’.

  • In the UK, around 79% of people living with sight loss are over 64.
  • 600,000 people suffer from age-related visual impairments in the UK.
  • 500,000 people suffer from glaucoma in the UK.
  • 144,000 people suffer from diabetic retinopathy in the UK.
