Top 10 Tips for Keeping Cool this Summer!

Most of us love the hot weather, but when we get too warm, our bodies can suffer. It's important to remember to stay cool during the warm seasons!

The Top 10 Tips for Keeping Cool this Summer

According to the Met Office, temperatures are set to surge above 30 degrees yet again across the UK over these upcoming weeks! As such, we thought it would be a good opportunity to offer up some quick tips on how to keep cool this summer!

If you want to stay hydrated during the summer, we’ve made an article dedicated to the different ways you can stay hydrated and healthy during the warm seasons.

1) Drink water!

You’ll constantly hear the fantastic and wide-ranging benefits of drinking water, but it really does help in keeping you cool. As water evaporates from our skin, it cools our natural body temperatures down. Water has an incredible number of benefits, which is why we’ve dedicated a whole article to how much water should you be drinking a day!

It is always so important to keep drinking water throughout the day – make sure to stay hydrated!

2) Shut the blinds and close your curtains!

Our instinct on a beautiful summer’s afternoon is to open the blinds and let the sunshine in. However, you’re essentially recreating a greenhouse in doing so. Keep your curtains or blinds closed throughout the day. If you’re looking for something a little more effective, consider getting some black-out blinds, that will assist in keeping the heat out.

3) Turn on the fan!

An electric fan may seem the obvious route to go when temperatures start to rise, but there’s a helpful trick that you can use to make yourself even cooler. Place a bowl of ice, or icy water, in front of the fan. As the water evaporates, it’ll make the air feel extra chilled.

4) Avoid the sun in peak hours!

The sun is at its strongest between around 11 AM to 2 PM, and sunburns are most likely to happen during this period of exposure. We strongly recommend that you leave soaking in the sunshine until the outside of these hours and make sure that you stay in the shade as much as possible.

If you need to go outside during these hours, make sure you dress appropriately!

5) Dress appropriately!

Wearing loose, breathable (perhaps cotton) clothing and footwear that won’t leave you sweating is critical to staying cool during the peak days of summer. If you do need to go out in the warmth, we advise you to wear a hat, keeping you cool by providing all necessary shade and protection from the sun. Remember to wear sunglasses as well!

6) Eat some ice cream!

It was the best way to cool down when we were a kid, and nothing has changed at all! You can cool down by eating an ice cream, lolly or even a popsicle! You can make your own from home as well!

7) Use wet face cloths!

During the hot weather, you can use wet face cloths, ice cubes or water spray atomisers to cool yourself down. A quick fix for cooling down is to place some cold water on the back of your wrists or use a wet face cloth to help cool your face!

8) Change up the long hair!

If you love having long hair and you’re feeling too hot, perhaps it’s time to tie it up? Having long hair can make you feel even hotter than you already would be, especially if you’re wearing it down.

Especially useful in the night time, tying your hair up allows the back of your neck some much-needed air, helping you dramatically to stay cool!

9) Summer bedding!

Most of us can agree that the winter’s nights are cold, very cold, in fact! We often substitute a thinner duvet for a thicker one during the colder seasons, which can often lead to overheating in the summer. Make sure to switch out your thick duvet and bedding to make sure you don’t dehydrate, or overheat, during your night’s rest!

10) Change up your exercise routine!

If you regularly work out and love getting in your daily exercise, you may want to think about working out at cooler times, either in early mornings or late evenings. Sometimes, we’re restricted on time, so if you do decide to work out during the warm hours of the day, take a few minutes out and make sure to drink a lot of water throughout the workout!
