As we head into June it is the perfect time to embrace outdoor activities, to soak up some of that good old vitamin D and to prioritise our health and well-being. With the warmer weather and longer days fast approaching you have the opportunity to start up exercise routines outside and nutritious, lighter meals that can contribute toward your overall wellness. We look into the importance of exercise and nutrition in the warmer months and provide valuable tips to help guide you to make the most of this enjoyable season to promote health and positivity.
Regular exercise is crucial for individuals of older age as it improves strength, flexibility and balance. Engaging in regular physical activity in the warmer months not only promotes an active, healthy lifestyle but offers new opportunities for mental stimulation and social interactions. Try exercising with a friend to motivate and support each other, or find a local walking group to join and meet new people. Do consult your GP before starting any new exercise programme.
The warmer weather brings a plethora of new outdoor activities to try or even old ones to pick back up again! Following nature trails, playing outdoor sports such as tennis or golf are all great options to enjoy the summer weather whilst soaking up the sun. Activities outside not only contribute to your physical fitness but allow you to connect with others, enjoying nature, reducing stress levels and simply enjoying the therapeutic benefits that come from being outdoors. Try to take your indoor exercise routine outside for a couple of times a week.
Hydration is vital for those of older age, especially in the warmer months when heat waves can be expected and we lose fluids through sweating in the heat. Some individuals may have a diminished sense of thirst meaning it is crucial to keep an eye on water intake. Remember to drink plenty throughout the day and consuming foods such as vegetables, fruits and soups to also aid hydration. Try to limit the consumption of sugary drinks and alcohol as they are known to have a negative impact on hydration. To drink more water try infusing your water with flavours such as lemon, cucumber or any fruit you fancy!

Eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet is important to support overall health for any time of the year. During the warmer months try and focus on eating the fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables that are often rich in the all-important minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. If you care for a loved one, encourage them to include a variety of colour in their meals and to consume lean proteins, healthy fats and whole grains to ensure a well-rounded, varied diet.

Summertime is great for individuals to go out and explore their local farm shops and experiment with new recipes. Engage in meal preparation and planning, even involving family or friends to batch cook together or cook each other meals to enjoy together through the week. This will make it easier to control portion sizes, maintain a healthy diet and meet your nutritional needs.

Whilst you are out and about enjoying the glorious sunshine, it is crucial to remember to prioritise sun protection. Get into the habit of applying sun cream every morning even if it doesnt seem particularly hot. Wear appropriate clothing, hats and sunglasses to shield your eyes from UV rays. When exercising outdoors it is important to do this in the cooler time of the day such as the morning or late afternoon, staying in shaded areas, if possible, when the weather is very warm to avoid overheating and sunburn.
The warmer weather brings wonderful opportunities for individuals to focus on health and wellbeing through outdoor exercise and refreshing, nutrition. By engaging in outdoor activities, enjoying a nutritious diet and staying hydrated you can enhance your quality of life and embrace the joys of summer months and beyond.
