Combating Loneliness in Older Adults in Norwich – Loneliness Awareness Week

Loneliness Awareness Week (15–21 June) celebrates connection, and CareYourWay Norwich is recognising it by helping people feel less alone in the community.

Loneliness Awareness Week (15–21 June), led by the Marmalade Trust, is a national campaign that encourages people to start conversations, build connections, and promote a greater understanding of loneliness. This year's theme is "Giving Loneliness a Voice”, which encourages people to express what loneliness feels like to them.

As a home care provider in Norwich, we understand how important meaningful social connections are. We are committed to helping older adults remain connected, supported, and engaged within their communities.

Understanding Loneliness

Loneliness is a natural human emotion that most people experience at some point in their lives. While being alone does not necessarily mean feeling lonely, loneliness can occur when a person's social relationships do not meet their emotional or social needs.

Research suggests that loneliness can affect anyone, but older adults may be particularly vulnerable due to factors such as retirement, bereavement, reduced mobility, or health conditions.

Long-Term Effects of Loneliness

Loneliness is not only an emotional challenge - it can also have a significant impact on physical and mental wellbeing.

Studies have linked prolonged loneliness to:

  • Increased risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Reduced overall wellbeing
  • Greater risk of cognitive decline and dementia

Because of these effects, loneliness should be recognised as an important health and wellbeing issue. If you are concerned about loneliness affecting yourself or a loved one, speaking with a GP or healthcare professional can be an important first step.
