Christmas Activities to Get You in the Festive Spirit

The festive period provides ample amounts of opportunities to celebrate the joy of Christmas, from decorating our homes to festive baking!

The Christmas season is a time of happiness, warmth, and togetherness. This is the time of the year that can be particularly special for older people, offering opportunities to create memories, to engage in festive activities and meet new people. Whether living independently, in assisted living, or with family, there are numerous enjoyable and meaningful activities that can boost your Christmas spirit and create new holiday experiences for all.

Decorating the Home

Decorate your living spaces with festive ornaments, lights, and a Christmas tree. This simple activity can bring back cherished memories and create a festive atmosphere. You can even make the bathroom a festive room by purchasing a Christmas bath mat and towels. Add a bath bomb to the tub so even enjoying a relaxing bath can have a hint of festiveness.

Baking Festive Treats

Get involved in holiday baking and cooking. Whether it's making traditional family recipes or trying out new ones, the kitchen can be a hub of joy and fill the home with delicious aromas during the Christmas season.  See below our super quick and easy mince pie recipe.

Enjoy some crafting activities like making your own Christmas cards, ornaments, or wreaths. These creations can be shared with loved ones or used to decorate your home, adding your own creative flair and personal touch to the festivities.

Listening to Christmas Music

Create a playlist of your favourite Christmas songs and enjoy an afternoon of joyful melodies. Music has the power to evoke emotions and bring back nostalgic memories, making it an ideal way to celebrate the festive season. Stick on some Christmas tunes whilst you play a board game with friends or family.

Christmas Films

Arrange a movie night with some Christmas classics, serve up some popcorn and a big mug of hot chocolate. This provides an opportunity for you to relax, enjoy heartwarming stories, and feel the magic of the season.

Local Events

Check for local Christmas events, choir concerts, or light displays in the community and at your local churches. Attending these events can be a great way to socialize, connect with others, and feel the community spirit.

Celebrate Virtually

If you are unable to attend social gatherings in person, set up virtual meet ups with family and friends. Video calls allow you to connect with loved ones and share the joy of the season. Due to covid it meant we all became wiz kids at setting up video calls. If you require assistance using video calls ask a relative, neighbour or check out tutorials on YouTube, they are extremely helpful.

Shopping Trips

Plan a day out for holiday shopping. Whether it's for gifts or simply enjoying the festive decorations in stores, this activity can bring a sense of excitement and anticipation. If you have completed your Christmas shopping for the year, window shopping is great to get out and see your towns decorations and big Christmas tree, pop into a local café for a festive drink, such as a gingerbread latte or a chocolate orange hot chocolate!

Engaging in some volunteering during the holiday season can be a fulfilling experience. There are often opportunities to contribute to local charities or community events, allowing you to give back and be a part of something meaningful.

Sharing Past Christmas Stories

When together with friends and family share your own Christmas stories and traditions. This not only helps to reminisce about past holidays but also allows the younger generations to learn and carry on family traditions.

The Christmas holidays offer a plethora of activities for people of all ages, promoting joy, connection, and a sense of purpose. Whether it's through festive decorations, delicious meals, or shared moments with loved ones, you can create meaningful experiences that help to make this season truly special. By tailoring activities to your own interests and capabilities, it ensures that you enjoy a festive and memorable Christmas that is sprinkled with plenty of love and warmth.
